I'd like to keep the space under our deck dry to use as a shed. It's going to have lattice all around, but I need something to divert rain running off the decking...Proper underdeck systems are pretty expensive.

I believe people sometimes use the plastic sheets of corrugated material attached to the bottom of the joists.

Anyone have any other brilliant ideas?

If you go the cooregated route....two things to keep in mind.

1. careful if you attach to joist - you do not want standing water against the wood all of the time

2. you want to have a pitch in the cooregated plastic or whatever to run off the water, so that it does sit, stagnate and mold.

300 bucks but it'll shed the water for ya...at least on the portion of the deck
it covers. ...other wise i don't think its feasible unless your gonna buy like pressure treated plywood to channel the water away from underneath.
thats two expensive methods. otherwise you'd have to attach eyebolts to the plate below the joists to run a series of nylon rope's to support a heavy duty tarp that could channel the water away. you didnt mention "what" your wanting to store underneath your deck.

Gardening stuff mostly, I'd probably tarp it all up in the winter anyway. It's a PITA to get the mower, shovels etc... out of the cellar as is.

Thought about a tarp, would be the easiest although I'd like something a bit more permanent...cost is key, spent a small fortune so far.

not sure how high your deck is or it's configuration....nor am I sure of you budget.

What about building a small roof like structure free from the deck under the deck. Just a few rafters, some cladding and shingles, shouldn't be too expensive if you are handy.

"shrink wrap" clear-white or blue, same stuff they use to cover boat's....it's tough and hold's up well.used it under deck's, made frame's out of strapping,pipes, covered it, instance storage. even used it to cover a huge deck one winter for a mason so he was inside nice and warm when he layed the bluestone down on the cement slab.

if you happen to poke a hole in it, all you need to do is take another small pc.of wrap, place it over the hole and heat it with a heat gun ...self sticking.

Johnny r should b using it over his flower pot.

I have seen corrugated metal roofing work. Install it with the ribs up so that there is less contact with the joists and more room for water to run. The biggest problems with it occur when ice builds up under the deck on top of the roofing. If the deck is on the gable end of the house or you have a gutter that should minimize the problem. You can shim the joists with strips of pressure treated lumber so that you end up with a pitch. Another consideration might be starting the roofing away from the house so that you do not risk structural damage to the wall below the deck from water going where you do not want it.

Deck is 9' above grade and has a gutter above it. Don't think water along the house will be an issue...

The shrink wrap idea has some great potential...simple and not that expensive. I'd like to keep the cost down, and the entire deck will be latticed in so you won't really be able to see it from the outside.

When I bought my house 4 years ago, the old owners had that corrugated plastic put in place under the deck to store their sports car. Thusfar, it works great. Diverted to a gutter hung on the deck, it is pretty waterproof. Only problem is that in heavy rain, so much water pours out of the plastic, it blasts past the gutter and splashes under the deck. I was going to put another piece in the ground to divert that problem but built a shed instead. More room = more toys!!

learned sometime back that if I didn't bug him, he'd get nervous and got the work done sooner..lower unit is here, all sanded, painted, cleared coated ready to go back on...should get a call pdq.. come on over....not in a hurry to drill hole's in the new stern.....///side's, been killing time in our new yak's fishin the pond's. dang thing's r fun and don't gulp gas./// september's comin an I'll get my killin time in then...all those people will be gone an have free range of my hunting ground's without being followed or get run over in the fog.
