Tail Tag using 308 wire

I am not sure how most guys do this, but when I read about other plug makers cutting off the hook from the shank of a perfectly good fishing hook, which cost about $.35 a piece on average I thought I would post how I do it. I take the leftover 308 wire we use for through-wiring our plugs, and I wrap that wire around the same screwdriver I use for making the tail of the plugs hook ready. I just wrap the wire around twice, no more, and leave the tag end about three inches. I put a bend in the tag end so I can put it in the fly vice. After mounting the tag on the back of the lure when its done I cut the excess wire from the now buck tailed tag, so the action of the tag isn"t impacted by the 308 wire. These three pics show the end product without the bucktail. Its cost free except for the bucktail and thread, and of course Sally Hanson clear fingernail polish. At least there is no $.35 hook involved. See below. |

Yeah I never understood why people would cut hooks when making your own from thru wire is so easy.

2 seasons ago i made a few hundred from cut offs, i made them like a split ring 1-3 turns depending on the application. It makes it easier for on off.

Why not either use a split ring or even better....just wire it on with the tail loop?

I still think bein able to replace or change the color makes the tags that you can take on an off the best.I'll admit I've used it many times to see what color tail works the best on some of my plugs. The ability to go back n forth is sweet.
