I just bought a pellet gun at BPS yesterday in Foxboro for this very reason. I wasn't asked for any i.d. for the gun or ammo. On a side note, do not EVER try to go to BPS when Taylor Swift is in town.

Also, if you pull the cards straight out the nose, you'll be fine. If you pull the card up through the slot, clean the slot out with a clean card.
