I coat most red cedar bodies with what I call a "finger coat" (applied by hand, with latex gloves on) of Devcon 5 minute epoxy... keeps anyone from thinking it's a booger blank.:laughs:

My guess would be that the lead slug was molded on the wire (note the beveled front on the slug), and they needed the extra depth to run the wire, butt to nose, to form the eye... then pull it back.
